"Let's Do the Twist" - A Simple Perspective on AC Induction Motors

The AC induction motor has become the workhorse of industry and, over the past 123 years, it has evolved to be powerful, reliable, efficient and adaptable in both fixed speed and variable speed applications. As materials, manufacturing techniques and cooling provisions have improved, these workhorse motors have become smaller and more powerful.

Why has the AC induction motor fared so well and why is it so reliable? I’m glad you asked. The simple answer is Simplicity of Design. Unlike DC motors which certainly have their place, AC Induction motors typically employ only a handful of component parts and of these, only the bearings which carry the rotating mass known as the Rotor are generally susceptible to normal wear over time.

While on the Subject of Motors...

What are your plans for controlling your motors? Will you:

  1. Choose traditional NEMA starters for your application or will you apply IEC-style motor starters?

     
  2. Require fixed Speed Forward or Forward Reverse control, Soft Starting, Variable Speed Control or perhaps a combination of all three?

     
  3. Apply traditional overload protection, such as overload heaters or take advantage of smart, flexible solid-state overload protection options; either with or without diagnostic reporting capabilities?

     
  4. Locate individual combination starters throughout your plant or application or would it be beneficial to have groups of motor-controllers in one or more centralized locations? Group-control offers many advantages; including ease of maintenance and troubleshooting, reduced installation cost and potential space-savings to name a few.

     
  5. Assemble your own group-motor cabinets or take advantage of smart-packaged solutions, such as Motor Control Centers?

     
  6. Consider integrating your motor control solutions into a larger control scenario with linkage over any number of significant industry network topologies such as Profibus, Profinet or others?

     
  7. Apply supplemental monitoring and control measures such as Power Monitors or other metering devices, Load Centers, Power Feeder Breakers for ancillary equipment or simple open space for mounting control devices such as Programmable Controllers, Relays, Terminal Blocks or other components?

     
  8. Install simple operator devices in the face of your panel/MCC or a Human Machine Interface to provide for Control, Diagnostics and system-commissioning capabilities?

     
  9. Require compact solutions due to limited space for installation?

     
  10. Adhere to Arc Flash resistant installation requirements?

Siemens Introduces New Motor Control Center Portfolio
New Arc Resistant MCCs Compliant with ANSI/IEEE C37.20.7 Standards

ATLANTA, August 16, 2011 -- Siemens Industry, Inc. introduces its new family of tiastar Motor Control Centers (MCC) manufactured at its 200,000 square-foot plant in West Chicago, Ill. The new line of MCCs will offer a broad array of innovative feature sets tailored to the needs of vertical markets such as general construction, water and wastewater, oil and gas, and general process industries.

The new tiastar MCC line includes the first Arc Resistant MCC compliant to ANSI/IEEE C37.20.7, and it’s criteria for containing and redirecting Arc Flash incident energy which has been successfully witness tested in the presence of Underwriters Laboratories (UL) representatives. The new SmartStart option features plug-and-play functionality which reduces commissioning time with pre-programmed and preconfigured data. High Density designs meeting UL and NEMA standards, while reducing unit size for NEMA 1 through starters, allow for up to a 10 percent weight reduction and a 25 percent smaller footprint.
